Unlocking A Safe

During my time as a professional locksmith technicians I got called few times for "safe" jobs. Opening safe jobs can be very tricky at times. Recently, I was called to open a "Maximum" brand fire safe and I came up with a good way to open the key lock on it which made the job much easier. Normally, the key-way on these type of safes is very small which makes them very hard to pick. In case drilling cross your mind, make a note that the lock is very hard and maybe nearly impossible to replace.

The method I came up with starts by unscrewing the escutcheon that is located on the front of the safe which connects to the horn of the lock. Once that was done, on the right side of the cylinder housing you will see a set screw which will be your goal to get to. This screw would need to be removed out of the way in anyway you can. Its going to be easier using a small chisel to turn the screw and a pair of needle nose pliers in order to remove it completely. Now that the screw set is out of the way, all that is left is rotating the cylinder and the lock should open.

While doing this process, there is a s slight chance that the tail-piece will bent a little, but it should be fairly easy to straighten it back. Now that the door is open and the cylinder is out, all that is left is finding a V61A blank which is a Volvo gas cap key and a slighly curved shim. Put the blank in the cylinder and shim pick it from the rear, once it is open, remove the plug, and now you will be able to cut the proper key for the lock.

Key Extraction Tip

This is a good tip I learned from one of my fellow locksmith technicians years ago for extracting broken keys from foreign car ignitions and doors. The process goes by using two spiral key extractors. They would need to be screwed down the milling grooves of each side of the broken key. Once the extractors are in tight position to grab the key but not so tight that you can't pull them out of the lock, the two extractors would need to be twisted together. Only one time they can be twisted, but that should be more than enough.

Not only does this process cause the extractors to grip the key in a firm way, it also moves any wafers out of the way that might interfere with the removal of the broken key piece. On a trunk or door lock it is recommended to use a diamond rake tool to hold the dust cover open. By inserting it in the bottom of the key-way and turning it so it lays flat, the job will be done successfully.

Restricted Access Areas

Restricted Access Areas is basically a lock that is keyed as a Restricted Access Area  is no more than a  Single Keyed Different. The terminology is much fancier when talking about lock security to an apartment complex manager, a small business owner or a school principal. When a room must be secured and off the Master-Key system, based on restricted access, a RAA core should be used. This might include a school confidential documents, prescription drug medicine room in a hospital, and more.

A Restricted Access Area I-core must be taken off the master keyed system and have its own Control Key. If there are more than one Restricted Access Area locks, each particular lock should have its own Control Key in order to take advantage of the highest level of security possible. Master keying a set of Restricted Access Area cores is not recommended. As access increases, so does the level of security. Stolen, lost, or any duplicate keys made always pose a danger to all locks affected by that particular key. In all maser keyed situations, security may fluctuate, it is important to carefully plan and remain care as it can diminish the consequences.
