An issue that you may find that you are having with the door lock is related to the fact that the door is sagging. This may cause the door strike to hit the strike plate too low or not allow it to spring into place altogether. Check the margins of the door. If the top of the door is closer to the jamb on the strike side of the door then the door is definitely sagging. A sagging door needs to be adjusted in order to function properly.
If it turns out that the strike is lined up correctly with the door, but it still won't keep the door closed then there is more troubleshooting that is needed to be performed. Depress the door strike inside and let it go. It should pop back out freely. If it sticks a bit, it means that it is necessary to lubricate it.
Lastly, the easiest problem to fix is when the door knob is hard to turn or is sticking. If the lock has a key, the key may be sticking or not working as well. By simply lubricating the lock set you will most likely be able take care of the problem. If you still experiencing issues, it would be recommended calling your local residential locksmith in Spokane.
